CLEFT LIP AND PALATE

Cleft lip and palate is the most common congenital anomaly affecting the face. It occurs about once in 700 live births and varies greatly in severity. In itself it is not associated with mental retardation, although mental retardation may be present when the cleft lip and palate are part of a more serious syndrome. Its etiology is not clear.
